Buckshot Vineyard Heathcote Primitivo 2022

THE VINEYARD: planted in 2001, this 1.4-acre patch is located on the cooler east facing slope of the Mt Camel range, at an elevation of 200m. Formed from 500-million-year-old Cambrian rocks, these ancient soils consist of “jasper”, green stone, granite and “BUCKSHOT” ironstone pebbles – clearly expressed through the resulting wines minerality.

Heathcote’s continental climate provides warm days and cool nights, promoting long and slow ripening fruit with excellent flavour, a nice balance of acid and tannin, and a seductive silky texture.

Viticulture focuses on soil health and minimal intervention.

VINTAGE 2022: A goldilocks year, not too hot or cold, producing small berries with exceptional flavour, structure and concentration.

THE VARIETY: Primitivo is an expressive grape variety from Italy’s south – aromatic, medium bodied and full of flavour, the variety sits somewhere between the profiles of Pinot Noir & Shiraz. It is ideally suited to these ancient soils and Heathcote’s dry continental climate with warm days and cool nights.

WINEMAKING: Grapes were de-stemmed before undergoing a gentle cold soak for 3 days, followed by a 12-day ferment. The resulting wine was transferred to a combination of new and seasoned French and American oak hogsheads to undergo malolactic fermentation and ageing prior to bottling.

DRINK WITH: A gorgeous wine with or without food: Charcuterie meats, roasted Pork or Duck are perfect combinations with this wine. A drink now wine or cellar for 5 years plus.

Will benefit greatly with 2-5 years in the cellar.
